Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel: Overture in C major
Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez
Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 3 in A minor, “Scottish”

Program Notes

It’s a million-in-one shot to have a musical genius
born into a family, but to wind up with two? Felix Mendelssohn has an established place in the repertoire—this night, jump into his masterful Scottish Symphony.

Women composers and their works were rarities in the 1800’s but our program begins with one of those rarities:
Felix’s sister Fanny, whose compositional prowess rivals her brother’s, wrote the delightful overture you will hear.

Sandwiched between gems from these sibling prodigies is perhaps the most popular guitar concerto, Concierto de Aranjuez,
performed by the renowned Jason Vieaux.
NPR describes the Grammy-winning guitarist as “perhaps the most precise and
soulful classical guitarist of his generation,” and Gramophone magazine puts him
“among the elite of today’s classical guitarists.” His most recent solo album, Play,
won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo.
