Charismatic Violinist Featured on Symphony’s “Timeless Treasures” Concert

Oct 06

Called “the most charismatic, the most virtuosic, and the most compelling American Violinist of her generation,” Rachel Barton Pine joins the Stockton Symphony for the second Classics concert of its 2009-2010 season on Thursday, October 15 at 8 PM and Saturday, October 17 at 6 PM. Entitled “Timeless Treasures,” the concert, conducted by Music Director Peter Jaffe, include music by Beethoven, Grieg, and Barber.  The featured work, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, concludes the Symphony’s mini-festival of Beethoven works. The performances take place at Atherton Auditorium on the campus of San Joaquin Delta College. Audience members can enjoy a free pre-concert talk by the Maestro beginning 45 minutes before the concert begins. Call the Symphony office at (209) 951-0196 to order tickets in advance or purchase online at www.stocktonsymphony.org.

A musician of incredible versatility, Ms. Barton Pine gives impressive performances of rock and early music, as well as classical music. With the Stockton Symphony, she will perform Samuel Barber’s passionately lyrical Violin Concerto. The unrestrained romanticism of the first two movements of this work is balanced by the virtuosity of the finale.

The Symphony will also perform two dance-inspired treasures, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and Grieg’s Holberg Suite. Beethoven’s masterpiece is often referred to as “the apotheosis of the dance.” All four movements are imbued with infectious rhythms and even the slow second movement passes by like a dignified, stately dance. Grieg composed the Holberg Suite in 1884 to celebrate the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of the Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. Evoking the era of Holberg’s life, it uses the dance forms commonly found in Baroque suites.

Ms. Barton Pine will teach a master class as part of the Master Class Series presented jointly by the Stockton Symphony and the University of the Pacific. The class will begin at 5:00 PM on Friday, October 16, 2009, in the Recital Hall at Pacific. Violinists are encouraged to apply by calling the Symphony office at (209) 951-0196. The public is invited to attend the master class at no charge.
