CENTENNIAL SEASON

Stockton Symphony’s Centennial

100 years of music. 1 community.
An unforgettable year of celebration.
Manlio Silva
Founder of Stockton Symphony

A Century in the Making

The earliest origins of the Stockton Symphony date back to the early 1900s, when two young brothers with a passion for music immigrated from Italy to Stockton, California. Manlio and Tulio Silva became pharmacists to earn a living in their new country, but music was their passion, and Manlio particularly couldn’t ignore that calling. Manlio started with a small group of players that they called the Little Symphony. In May 1926, he conducted the inaugural performance of the newly formed Stockton Symphony.

A hundred years later, it’s California’s third oldest continuously operating symphony orchestra, one that kept performing even through the world wars. From a suitcase full of handwritten music to a full orchestra performing world premieres, the story of the Stockton Symphony is really a story about this community: the families who’ve grown up with it, the musicians who’ve traveled for decades to be part of it, and the audiences who keep coming back.

When I’m there, I really am so proud to be there. I just think of him up there on the podium, and how proud he would be that it’s still going on.

— Francesca Vera, Manlio Silva’s niece

There’s something absolutely magic about live performance. You can see it, you can hear it, you can practically taste it coming off the stage. All those hearts, minds, and souls working together. It’s absolutely fabulous.

— Maestro Peter Jaffe

A Legacy of Music Education

Sharing the magic of music with the next generation is key to keeping the Stockton Symphony alive. For more than 20 years, our Steppin’ Out educational concert series has brought thousands of students into the concert hall each year, many experiencing a live symphony for the first time. These shows often feature young musicians, such as 14-year-old violinist Ava Pakiam. As Maestro Peter Jaffe puts it, “To have somebody who’s really close to their age play is like, ‘wow, I bet I could do that!’”

This Centennial Season, that same spirit gets a new stage. It’s About Time, on January 28, 2027, in Lodi, brings the beloved Steppin’ Out concert experience to the public for the first time, alongside our ongoing school field trip performances. Families and music lovers of every age are invited to share in the same energy that’s introduced generations of students to live symphonic music.

We get a lot of positive feedback from the students. When I ask them, ‘Did you like it?’ they say things like, ‘Yeah! We really liked it! It was cool!
